Hiring a driver yourself vs using a placement agency in Pakistan
You can hire a driver yourself through referrals or classifieds, and many people do. The difficulty is time and risk: you have to screen dozens of calls, check documents you may not know how to verify, and start again from zero if the driver leaves after a month.
A placement agency does the first round of work for you. At HireDriver.pk we turn your requirements into a clear brief, shortlist drivers who fit your car, location and hours, and share their experience and references so you can run your own checks. You still interview, trial and choose the driver yourself, and you employ them directly. The difference is the safety net: if the driver we place leaves for any reason within six months, we provide a replacement without an additional agency fee.
| Hiring yourself | Through HireDriver.pk | |
|---|---|---|
| Finding candidates | Referrals, classifieds | Shortlist matched to your brief |
| Screening | You do it all | First round done for you |
| Cost | Your time | One-time fee = first monthly salary |
| If the driver leaves early | Start again | Free replacement within 6 months |
| Who employs the driver | You | You |
How much does it cost to hire a driver in Pakistan?
Hiring a full-time driver in Pakistan has two costs. The first is the driver’s monthly salary, which you pay directly to the driver every month. The second is HireDriver.pk’s placement fee, which is charged once and equals the driver’s first monthly salary. There is no monthly commission, no registration charge and no hidden renewal fee.
The legal floor for a full-time salary in Pakistan is the Islamabad Capital Territory minimum wage for unskilled workers: Rs 40,700 per month for 26 working days (1 July 2026). Raised from Rs 37,000; notification reported on 19 August 2026. A driver is a skilled role, so most experienced drivers are paid above this floor. Published market data shows a very wide spread: WageIndicator reports pay for car, taxi and van drivers in Pakistan from Rs 16,710 to Rs 92,896 a month in 2026, and Indeed’s national average for drivers was Rs 30,006 a month (1 August 2026, 449 reported salaries). Those averages include part-time and informal work; for a full-time household or office role you should plan for at least the statutory minimum.
| Province / territory | Minimum monthly wage | Effective |
|---|---|---|
| Islamabad Capital Territory | Rs 40,700 | 1 July 2026 |
| Sindh | Rs 43,000 | 1 July 2026 |
| Punjab | Rs 40,000 | FY 2025-26 (notified 8 September 2025) |
| Khyber Pakhtunkhwa | Rs 40,000 | FY 2025-26 (notified 10 September 2025) |
| Balochistan | Rs 37,000 | FY 2025-26 (media reports) |
What pushes a driver’s salary up: long or unpredictable hours, frequent late evenings, Sunday duty, premium or automatic vehicles, executive and guest-handling duties, and a live-out arrangement where the driver commutes. What keeps it predictable: a fixed duty window, one weekly day off, a clear overtime rule and a written list of duties. Fuel, tolls, parking and servicing remain the car owner’s costs unless you agree otherwise.
Checks to complete before a driver starts in Pakistan
A good placement is built on checks you can actually verify. Before a driver starts work in Pakistan, ask for the original CNIC, a valid driving licence for your vehicle class and contact details for at least two previous employers. In Islamabad Capital Territory, licences are issued by Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP), which offers online licence verification; confirm the licence number, category and expiry date there rather than relying on a photocopy.
- CNIC: match the name and photograph to the person you meet, and keep a copy with consent.
- Driving licence: check the category covers your car (a car/jeep licence for a private car; LTV or HTV for commercial vehicles) and that it has not expired.
- References: speak to previous employers yourself and ask how long the driver worked, why they left and whether they would rehire.
- Police character certificate: ask for a character certificate from Islamabad Police where available.
- Trial drive: a supervised drive in your own car, on your real route, including parking and a busy junction.
- Written terms: duties, hours, salary, weekly day off, overtime and notice period.
Household employment in Islamabad Capital Territory is also covered by the Islamabad Capital Territory Domestic Workers Act, 2022. Read the current text or take advice on written terms, rest days and wages for domestic workers before finalising the agreement.
What to include in your driver brief for your area
The more precise the brief, the better the match. Drivers decide whether a job suits them based on hours, distance from home and the kind of passengers they will drive, so these details save everyone time.
- Exact pickup point and nearest landmark in your area
- Vehicle make, model, year and transmission
- Reporting time, normal finish time and weekly day off
- Every regular destination: schools, offices, clinics, markets
- Expected waiting time between trips
- Late evenings, weekends and any out-of-city travel
- Who in the household or office gives instructions
- Live-in or live-out preference and any accommodation offered
- Your salary range and how overtime is paid
Key terms explained
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Placement agency | A business that finds and shortlists candidates for an employer. The employer interviews, chooses and employs the driver directly. |
| Full-time placement | A permanent driving job on a monthly salary, usually a full day six days a week, as opposed to a daily or hourly booking. |
| Placement fee | The amount paid to the agency for a successful placement. At HireDriver.pk it is charged once and equals the driver’s first monthly salary. |
| Replacement guarantee | A promise to find another driver without a new fee if the placed driver leaves within a set period. Ours is six months, for any reason. |
| Minimum wage | The lowest lawful monthly pay for full-time work, set by each province or territory for 26 working days. |
| CNIC | The Computerised National Identity Card issued by NADRA; the basic identity document every driver should show in original. |
| LTV licence | A licence for light transport vehicles such as vans and pickups used commercially. |
| HTV licence | A licence for heavy transport vehicles such as buses and trucks. |
| Police character certificate | A certificate issued by the police confirming a person’s record, available through provincial police services. |
| Probation | A short trial period at the start of employment, often one month, with a simple notice rule for both sides. |
| Overtime | Work beyond the agreed normal hours, paid at an agreed rate or fixed amount per late evening. |
| Live-in / live-out | A live-in driver stays at or near the employer’s home; a live-out driver commutes daily. Hours and pay should be agreed either way. |
Knowing these terms makes it easier to compare agencies, read an employment agreement and ask the right questions before a driver starts.
