A full-time driver contract in Pakistan should fit on one or two pages and cover the parties, duties, working hours and weekly day off, salary and payment date, overtime, leave, expenses such as fuel, probation, notice period and confidentiality. Both employer and driver should sign it before the first day.

Why a written agreement matters
Most disputes between employers and drivers come from things that were never written down: what time the day really ends, whether Sunday is off, who pays for fuel on a personal errand, or how much notice either side must give. A short written agreement settles these questions in advance and protects both of you. It also makes the job more attractive to good drivers, who value clarity.
Household employment is increasingly covered by law in Pakistan. In Punjab, the Punjab Domestic Workers Act, 2019 applies to domestic workers; in Islamabad, the Islamabad Capital Territory Domestic Workers Act, 2022. Read the current text or take advice on rest days, wages and written terms that apply to you.
How to prepare a driver job description
Start with the job description. It becomes the first section of the agreement and the brief you share with candidates.
- Job title: personal driver, family driver, office driver, chauffeur
- Vehicle(s): make, model, transmission
- Main duties: commuting, school runs, errands, guest pickups
- Other duties: car cleaning, basic checks, vehicle log
- Place of work: home address and regular destinations
- Reporting line: who gives instructions
How to set working hours for a family driver
Family roles are the hardest to define because the day is broken into school runs, errands and evening trips. Write the normal reporting time and finish time, the weekly day off, and the rule for late evenings. Count waiting time as working time.
- Normal hours, e.g. 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, six days a week
- Weekly day off, e.g. Sunday or another fixed day
- Midday gap: available for errands or rest?
- Late evenings: how many per week are normal, and how they are paid
- Notice for schedule changes
Salary, payment date and overtime
State the monthly salary in figures, the payment date and the method. The salary must meet at least the provincial minimum wage for full-time work (for example Rs 40,700 in Islamabad and Rs 40,000 in Punjab in 2026). Define overtime clearly: a fixed amount per late evening, or an hourly rate after the normal finish time.
How to negotiate driver salary fairly
- Explain the full routine honestly, including evenings and weekends.
- Ask what the driver earned previously and what they are expecting.
- Start from the minimum wage and add for hours, vehicle and duties.
- Negotiate on structure as well as amount: guaranteed day off, paid overtime, a review date.
- Agree a probation period and a salary review after it.
Driver fuel expenses: who pays?
The car owner pays for fuel, tolls, parking and maintenance in a normal placement, because these are costs of running the car, not of employing the driver. The agreement should say how fuel is bought (fuel card, cash advance or reimbursement), how receipts are recorded and whether the driver may use the car for personal trips (usually not).
- Fuel method: card, advance or reimbursement
- Receipts: kept and submitted weekly
- Tolls and parking: reimbursed against receipts
- Personal use of the car: not allowed unless agreed
- Traffic fines: who pays when the driver is at fault
Leave, holidays and notice
- Weekly day off
- Public holidays and Eid leave, with cover arrangements
- Sick leave and how it is reported
- Notice period for either side, e.g. two weeks or one month
- Probation period, e.g. one month
Conduct and confidentiality
Include a short section on conduct: no smoking in the car, no use of mobile phones while driving, respectful behaviour, punctuality and confidentiality about the family’s or company’s affairs. Keep it reasonable and specific.
A simple structure you can follow
- Parties: employer and driver names, CNIC numbers, addresses
- Start date and probation
- Job description and vehicle
- Working hours, day off, overtime
- Salary, payment date and review
- Expenses and fuel
- Leave and holidays
- Conduct and confidentiality
- Notice and termination
- Signatures and date
This structure is a practical starting point, not legal advice. For complex arrangements, take professional advice.
Hiring through HireDriver.pk
When we place a driver, we encourage a written agreement between you and the driver. Our own terms are simple: a one-time fee equal to the first monthly salary and a free replacement if the placed driver leaves within six months. Call or WhatsApp 0339 1222233.
Probation and review clauses
A probation clause sets a short period, often one month, during which either side may end the arrangement with brief notice. Pair it with a review clause: a date when the salary and duties will be reviewed. Both clauses reduce anxiety on both sides and make honest feedback normal.
Ending the agreement fairly
- Agree a notice period for both sides, such as two weeks or one month
- State that the final salary is paid up to the last working day
- Agree the return of keys, fuel cards and documents
- Remove the driver from society or school registers
- Keep a short written note of the end date
Key terms explained
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Placement agency | A business that finds and shortlists candidates for an employer. The employer interviews, chooses and employs the driver directly. |
| Full-time placement | A permanent driving job on a monthly salary, usually a full day six days a week, as opposed to a daily or hourly booking. |
| Placement fee | The amount paid to the agency for a successful placement. At HireDriver.pk it is charged once and equals the driver’s first monthly salary. |
| Replacement guarantee | A promise to find another driver without a new fee if the placed driver leaves within a set period. Ours is six months, for any reason. |
| Minimum wage | The lowest lawful monthly pay for full-time work, set by each province or territory for 26 working days. |
| CNIC | The Computerised National Identity Card issued by NADRA; the basic identity document every driver should show in original. |
| LTV licence | A licence for light transport vehicles such as vans and pickups used commercially. |
| HTV licence | A licence for heavy transport vehicles such as buses and trucks. |
| Police character certificate | A certificate issued by the police confirming a person’s record, available through provincial police services. |
| Probation | A short trial period at the start of employment, often one month, with a simple notice rule for both sides. |
| Overtime | Work beyond the agreed normal hours, paid at an agreed rate or fixed amount per late evening. |
| Live-in / live-out | A live-in driver stays at or near the employer’s home; a live-out driver commutes daily. Hours and pay should be agreed either way. |
Knowing these terms makes it easier to compare agencies, read an employment agreement and ask the right questions before a driver starts.
